Highlights from Chapter 5:
Sustainability Infrastructure
- We have diverted about 95 percent (302,961 tons) of all waste, including 118,381 tons recycled, 87,332 tons reused, 11,740 tons composted, and 85,508 tons stockpiled over our entire construction timeframe.
- Our safety record in 2022 exhibited significantly lower injury rates than the state benchmark.
- We provided $2 million in funding for urban tree planting in disadvantaged communities near the high-speed rail tracks.
- Governor Gavin Newsom signed a climate package dedicating $3.7 billion toward climate resilience, including extreme heat and sea-level rise, in September 2021.
- Our new station design contracts include Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) requirements, which enhance safety.
- In 2023, we aligned with the Buy Clean California Act, specifying the use of environmental product declarations (EPD) for construction materials.
- We continue to analyze our material supply chains to understand their influence on the project’s lifecycle footprint.
